Installation of upgraded material feedwater heater

Chloride stress corrosion cracking problems occur on HRSG feed water preheaters, built with austenitic stainless steel pressure parts. Feedwater preheaters are often used in HRSGs as the last stage of heat recovery before the stack. The most common material used for this application has been stainless steel TP-304. However, TP-304, as well as other austenitic stainless steels, are susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Very small concentration of aqueous chlorides can cause stress corrosion cracking and tube failures.

During the last five years, Bremco has helped a number of clients to determine the best construction solutions for their feedwater heater retrofit. The ability to supply both the management and multiple crafts required to complete a developed project has provided a winning combination for many clients within the HRSG and power generation fields.

Waterside Erosion/Corrosion

Erosion/corrosion is a progressive form of waterside metal wastage that strips away metal from the inside of pipes and tubes. Pressure parts will thin if erosion/corrosion is occurring, and failures will result.

Conditions prominent to erosion/corrosion are high water velocities, low water pH, 230-400 degrees F. water temperatures, low oxygen content water and ordinary carbon steel materials. Units most susceptible to erosion/corrosion would be low-temp economizers, boilers below 250 psi and boilers operated below intended pressures.

A most common mechanical solution that Bremco has demonstrated in numerous units is an upgrade to a more resistant tube material, T-22. Bremco suggests that HRSG users check boiler water for iron content, check target areas such as elbows and bends with an ultrasonic thickness tester and apply borescope inspection, where applicable.

HRSG Duct Liner Repair And Replacement

Most duct liner systems look very similar from one application to the next. However, there are important differences that should be taken into consideration, such as turbulence, bulk gas temperature and peak temperatures, stud density, liner alloy and gauge, insulation material and thickness, as well as aspects of mechanical design based on gas side conditions.

A repair contractor must have the skill level and experience to match the job. Welding skills, field engineers and job supervisors who thoroughly understand the duct liner system are necessary for a successful and lasting installation. Bremco has successfully repaired and installed numerous duct liner. If you are experiencing liner problems, consider a liner system upgrade with an inspection during your next outage.
